Shocking Title: Awesome Memoir

Jennette McCurdy's book "I'm Glad My Mom Died" takes on Hollywood and the classic 'stage mom'.

When the synopsis said ‘heartbreaking’ they meant it. Jennette’s raw exploration of her Hollywood childhood, her’s mother’s mental health and abuse and her own eating disorders made for a pretty hard-hitting memoir. Sadly her situation isn’t unique in the realm of child actors and it makes me wonder why it continues to be allowed to happen. The industry is literally sacrificing so many of these children and their mental health for money.

Although the story is difficult to read, Jennette tells it in a very candid way. She’s not playing the martyr or looking for sympathy. The entire story just feels like her way of challenging the industry and starting to reclaim what she lost to it. She really has come a long way in a short time and I’ll be interested to see what life holds for her.

I listened to this book and hearing her tell her own story was extremely powerful. She’s also an excellent audio narrator. If she wanted to, she could have a thriving career in audiobooks and someone needs to hook her up.

Read the trigger warnings before diving into this one, but definitely read it. Definitely worth the bookstagram hype!
